Jurij Meile

Horn Pedagogy Teacher, Scuola Universitaria di Musica

Jurij Meile was born in Bari with an Italian mother and a Swiss father, and grew up in St. Gallen where, at 18 years old, he began learning the horn. He studied for 2 years at the University of Zurich (Russian Language and Literature, General and East-European History) whilst at the same time studying at the „Vorberufssschule“ of the Musikhochschule Zurich. He left his studies at University to fully dedicate his time to music and moved to Italy to study the French horn at the Conservatorio N.Piccinni in Bari with Pietro Palmisano and then the Vatican Music School "T.L. da Victoria" at Rome with Luciano Giuliani.

After his diploma, Jurij continued his studies at Scuola APM Saluzzo/Orchestra RAI for orchestra training and afterwards at the Teatro alla Scala orchestra academy in Milan. He returned to Switzerland specialising on the natural horn at the “Schola Cantorum Basilensis” with Thomas Müller. During this time he also attended classes in the natural horn by Ermes Pecchinini at “Accademia Internazionale dell Musica/Scuola Civica di Milano”. He completed a Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy/Horn at Hochschule der Künste of Bern and a Masters in Advanced Studies in Culture Management at the Universität Basel.

From 2004 Jurij has taught french horn at Scuola di Musica del Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana. From 2010, he now teaches horn pedagogy at Scuola Universitaria di Musica at the same Conservatory and collaborates with the research and development division in guiding the project ArtEM (arts, education, mediation).

Jurij is a highly active musician collaborating with ensembles specialising in music Performed with original instruments: La Petite Bande, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, I Barocchisti, New Dutch Academy, Le Parlement de Musique, La Chapelle Rhénane, Haydn Sinfonietta, Wien. Finally, he is also member of the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop Berlin who are well known for innovative programmes trying to transport classical music in new ways in new places to a new audience.
