Enjoying an accomplished performance, delivered in a renowned venue, constitutes a much cherished cultural experience. But what are the features of these venues that make them so distinctive? To what extent is the perception of their features built upon objective acoustical properties, a subjective sense of place and occasion, the result of persuasive marketing and hype, or some combination of the above?
Methods
Performance Space will generate new knowledge of the interplay between audiences, performers, and performance venues. Specifically, the project will employ a combination of survey, observational and interview studies:
- to investigate audiences’ perceptions and experiences of internationally renowned performance spaces,
- to elucidate how these venues shape today’s performance activities,
- to integrate this knowledge into the training of advanced music students.
